More power for flagship Audi RS Q3 Performance

Audi has topped off its Q3 range with a new 'RS performance' model pumping out 367PS - an increase of 27PS over the 'standard' RS Q3.

Joining RS 6 and RS 7 performance variants in the new wave of models positioned above regular RS equivalents, the RS Q3 performance boasts improved acceleration on the way to a 167mph top speed, and features equipment enhancements
which help distinguish it from its namesake.

Power comes from a revised version of the five-cylinder 2.5-litre TFSI petrol engine mated to a seven-speed S tronic transmission. Peak torque of 465 Nm (343.0 lbft) is available between 1,625 and 5,550 rpm, helping the compact SUV reach 62mph from rest in 4.4 seconds (RS Q3 4.8), yet deliver combined consumption of up to 32.8mpg, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 203 g/km.

The sports suspension has been lowered by 20mm while quattro permanent all-wheel drive transfers the power to the road via a hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled multi-plate clutch.

RS design details include restyled bumpers with large air inlets up front, a heavily profiled diffuser insert at the rear and gloss black honeycomb grilles.

The exterior is also distinguishable from the 'standard' RS Q3 through additional matt titanium-look detailing, 20-inch 'performance exclusive' alloy wheels and the exclusive option of Ascari blue metallic paint.

Inside the instrumentation features grey faces, white dials and red needles. Sports seats in Alcantara and leather with honeycomb stitching in blue are standard for UK models, and the blue accents are also applied to other elements throughout the cabin.

UK order books for the new Audi RS Q3 performance are expected to open later this month with prices starting from £49,175 on the road.

Fiat 500X strikes a pose in Zoolander 2

Fiat’s 500X has starred alongside supermodel Derek Zoolander in the eagerly-anticipated “Zoolander 2” sequel.

At a fan screening of the new film in Rome, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles was present as a main partner on the red carpet, with a Fiat 500X finished in its special Tri-Coat Yellow livery. Produced by Paramount Pictures and shot predominantly in Rome, the film brings the Fiat 500X together for the first time with one of the most famous film and fashion characters.

The collaboration between Fiat and Paramount has also produced a new Fiat 500X advertisement called "Selfie” in which Zoolander fools around with a rather special camera.. a safety camera. Driving his yellow Fiat 500X, he poses for photos by the safety camera as though he were on a fashion shoot, showing off his best expressions, especially his mythical ‘Blue Steel’ pose. It’s an unconventional fashion shoot which Zoolander thinks shows him at his dazzling best but which is ultimately interrupted by the police.

Zoolander 2 is set for a UK release on February 12, 2016. The Fiat 500X range starts at £14,595 OTR.

Revamped DS 3 revealed

Facelifted versions of both the hatchback and Cabrio versions of the DS 3 have been unveiled.

The revamp includes a revised front end featuring the "DS Wings" that are sculpted around a vertically-oriented grille bearing the DS emblem. Surrounded in chrome, the grille extends towards the LED headlamps and fog lamps via two chromed-finished wings.

The new car offers more personalisation options for the roof, body, rear view mirror housings, dashboard and gear knob. Customers can now choose from 78 body/roof colour combinations and four fabric roofs for the DS 3 Cabrio.

The new DS 3 will be available in the UK with seven engines, including three PureTech three-cylinder petrol units. There are also two THP four-cylinder petrol engines and two BlueHDi diesels. There are two types of gearbox - manual and a latest-generation automatic. The result is CO2 emissions from 87g/km (for the BlueHDi 100) and no more than 129g/km for the range as a whole.

The range will also include Performance versions with revised styling and power from the top of the range 208hp 1.6 THP S&S engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox with shorter gear ratios. Despite 300Nm of torque, CO2 emissions are a modest 125g/km.

Chassis highlights include a Torsen limited slip differential (to improve traction, road-holding and handling), suspension which has been lowered by 15mm and the front and rear tracks that have been widened by 26mm and 14mm, respectively.

The Performance models are also fitted with larger 323mm brake discs at the front with special Brembo calipers, and 249mm discs at the rear.

On the styling front, highlights include a special twin tailpipe, carbon side mouldings, a new sill plate design and Matt Black wheel arch extensions, while on the inside, there are leather and Alcantara upholstered bucket seats, with special DS Performance embroidery.

New DS 3 models are equipped with Mirror Screen functionality, comprising Apple CarPlay or MirrorLink (for Android phones), bringing drivers a smarter, safer and more enjoyable way of experiencing all the personalised features of their smartphones.

Drivers can also download "MyDS", a free app (available for Android and iOS) informing them of their servicing schedule, fuel economy and parking location.
Active City Brake helps to prevent minor collisions at low speeds and the DS 3 is now also equipped with front and rear parking sensors, as well as a reversing camera with visual indicator guide lines on the 7-inch screen.
Britain is the leading market for DS 3 sales. More were registered in the UK last year than in France or any other global market.

Since launching in 2010, 390,000 have been sold in total.

One-off Infiniti Q30 sculpture at London Art Fair

Infiniti has unveiled a Q30 with a difference the opening of the 2016 London Art Fair at the Islington Business Centre.

Located just outside the show's entrance is a special Q30, to which 48,000 copper tacks have been painstakingly adhered, covering half of the hatchback's entire bodywork.

Created with the help of contemporary artist Rachel Ducker, the sculpture is made more dynamic with the addition of one of the human like steel wire figures for which she is renowned, leaning out of the side window. The female figure is topped with long two-tone coloured hair, which is flowing outwards as if it were blowing in the wind.

From one side the Q30 appears untouched while the other side is completely covered in the copper tacks. From a distance the car seems to be covered in a layer of long copper coloured hair but to the touch the sharp heads of the tacks can be felt, just like a bed of nails.

These tacks were specifically chosen due to the ability of the copper colour to radiate a variety of different shades depending on the light conditions and angle of viewing; similar to the Liquid Copper Q30 launch colour.

Each tack took approximately 10 seconds to adhere to the body of the Q30, which means that that aspect of the sculpture took around 8000 minutes (or 133 hours) to create.

Rachel Ducker, a self-confessed car nut, spends most of her time living either in Oxford or Marrakech these days, but made a special appearance at the show to not only reveal the Q30 but to also meet with the Infiniti Car designer Simon Cox to discuss the thinking behind the project.

Rachel stated: "My work is all about energy and movement and to put my figures alongside such a well-designed car as the Q30, gave me the opportunity to combine both of my passions. Art is all about what people see as they look at the display, whatever it may be. I do not believe in giving a descriptive list of what it is supposed to mean or what it means to me. Everyone sees things differently depending on the mood of the individual or how the light portrays the image at that particular time."

Simon Cox, Infiniti design director based in Paddington London, had a similar background to Rachel, studying sculpture and jewellery design, before moving onto cars. Simon was both excited and intrigued to see how the car looked. "It is amazing to see how the copper tacks provide a dramatic effect to how the light reflects across the bonnet and down the shoulder lines. It creates a striking flow as you move around the car. I really like Rachel's work and how she portrays movement to bring her models to life."

The one-off Q30 sculpture will be on display outside the entrance to the 2016 London Art Fair in Islington until Sunday 24 January.

Renault-Nissan to launch autonomous drive by 2020

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has confirmed it will launch more than 10 vehicles with autonomous drive technology in the next four years.

The global car group confirmed the range of vehicles with autonomous capabilities will roll-out in the United States, Europe, Japan and China through 2020. The technology will be installed on mainstream, mass-market cars ‘at affordable prices’. The car group has hired new executive to oversee connectivity and connected car services globally.

Safety and efficiency of vehicles across the Renault-Nissan Alliance has ‘increased dramatically’, with fatal and serious injuries in Japanese Nissan vehicles decreasing 61 percent in 20 years. Fatal and serious injuries in Renault vehicles in France decreased 80 percent in 15 years. Autonomous drive is expected to help further reduce driver error, which is responsible for up to 90 percent of all fatalities.

2016 will mark the debut of vehicles with ‘single-lane control’ a feature that allows cars to drive autonomously on motorways, including in heavy, stop-and-go traffic. In 2018, Renault-Nissan will launch vehicles with ‘multiple-lane control’ which can autonomously negotiate hazards and change lanes during motorway driving. And 2020 will see the launch of ‘intersection autonomy’ which can navigate city intersections and heavy urban traffic without driver intervention.

Later this year the Alliance will launch a new automotive mobile app which allows remote interaction with your car. Next year, it will launch the first Alliance Multimedia System providing new multimedia and navigation features, as well as improved smartphone integration and wireless map updates.

“Renault-Nissan Alliance is deeply committed to the twin goals of ‘zero emissions and zero fatalities'” Renault-Nissan Alliance Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn said at the Renault-Nissan Silicon Valley Research Center. “That’s why we are developing autonomous driving and connectivity for mass-market, mainstream vehicles on three continents.”

The Renault-Nissan Alliance is a partnership between Paris-based Renault and Yokohama, Japan-based Nissan and have been strategic partners since 1999.

UK plug-in car grant extended until 2018

The government has announced a long-term extension to the UK’s plug-in car grant.

Backed by a £400 million package to treble the number of ultra low emission vehicles on Britain’s roads, the grant will continue beyond the latest guarantee of February 2016 until at least the end of March 2018, and will mean more than 100,000 people will benefit over the coming years — double the number who have already claimed the grant since 2011. From next March, buyers of the greenest cars can save up to £4,500 off the overall purchase price.

Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “The UK is a world leader in the uptake of low emission vehicles and the plug-in car grant has been key to that success. Extending the grant in a sustainable way ensures more than 100,000 people will benefit from financial support when purchasing these cheap-to-run and green cars. We are determined to keep Britain at the forefront of the technology, increasing our support for plug-in vehicles to £600 million over the next 5 years to cut emissions, create jobs and support our cutting-edge industries.”

The grant was created in 2011 to encourage sales of ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs) and has been instrumental in the UK becoming the biggest ULEV market in the EU, and the fourth largest in the world with some 50,000 people already benefitting.

From 1 March 2016, 2 grant rates will be available to ensure the funding is sustainable and focus financial support on the greenest vehicles. ‘Category 1’ vehicles with a zero emission range of over 70 miles will benefit from a grant of £4500. ‘Category 2 and 3’ vehicles with a shorter zero emission range — such as plug-in hybrid vehicles with a petrol or diesel engine — will receive £2500.

The new grant levels reflect strong growth in the sector with sales of ULEVs doubling over the past year. Motorists also have a wider choice of 29 ULEVs on the market — 5 times as many as when the plug-in car grant was launched. The UK is also at the forefront of the roll-out of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, which are also eligible for the £4500 grant thanks to their zero tailpipe emissions.

The government has also today announced it will continue to provide a grant to help ULEV owners have a dedicated charge point installed at their home. From 1 March 2016, the electric vehicle homecharge scheme (EVHS) will offer £500 per installation, which on average will cover around half of the cost of getting a charge point.

The plug-in car grant is just one element of a £600 million package of measures from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles over the course of this parliament which also includes funding for chargepoints, grants encouraging low emission buses and taxis and R&D funding for innovative technology such as lighter vehicles and longer-lasting car batteries.

To encourage zero emission vehicles and maximise the number of everyday motorists who can benefit from government support, a price cap will also be introduced from 1 March 2016. Category 2 and 3 models with a list price of over £60,000 will not be eligible for the grant, but all category 1 vehicles with a zero emission range of over 70 miles will be eligible for the full £4,500 grant.

The government has committed to make nearly all cars and vans in the UK zero emission by 2050, and announced in the Spending Review to increase funding to £600 million between 2015 and 2020 to support the development, manufacture and uptake of ULEVs.

This commitment was reinforced when the UK was one of 14 international members of the Zero Emission Vehicle Alliance to sign a pledge promoting the uptake of electric cars at the recent Paris climate conference.

Hyundai teases new IONIQ

A new rendering of Hyundai’s all-new IONIQ hints at the looks of the alternative-fuel compact vehicle, which is due for launch in early 2016.

Hyundai has confirmed that the IONIQ will be the world’s first car to offer a choice of three ultra-low-emission powertrains: full electric, plug-in gasoline / electric hybrid, or gasoline / electric hybrid.

With a sleek, coupe-like silhouette, Hyundai says the IONIQ will deliver a fun and responsive driving experience, while also meeting the needs of those wishing to reduce the impact their motoring has on the environment.

At the front, it sports the familiar Hyundai hexagonal grille, topped by a gloss-black element that extends outwards to meet new headlamps featuring integrated ‘C’-position lights.

Inside the IONIQ the smooth, clutter-free theme continues. A clear, logical approach has been applied to the layout of control functions, with simple surfaces that make use of eco-friendly materials to convey, says Hyundai, ‘a futuristic yet warm cabin ambience that will appeal to a new generation of motorists’.

The IONIQ’s name references elements of its creation. An ion is an electrically-charged atom, linking to the car’s clever combination of electrified powertrains. The ‘I’ is said to reference the ‘unique offering it brings to the Hyundai range, demonstrating the brand’s environmental commitment and willingness to maximise choice for its customers’. Finally, the Q is depicted in the car’s logo as a visual breakthrough, acknowledging the fresh new approach of this advanced, low-emission model.

Following a world premiere in Korea in January, the IONIQ is due to be shown during March 2016 at the Geneva International Motor Show and the New York Auto Show.

Spotify playlist marks 5 years of Nissan LEAF

Nissan has launched a Spotify playlist specially curated by fans around the world in celebration of the fifth anniversary of the delivery of the world's first all-electric LEAF.

Users can search for the "100% Nissan LEAF 5th Birthday" playlist on Spotify and hear 10 fan-suggested songs ranging from No. 1 hits to obscure B-side tracks, all of which can be streamed via the Bluetooth connection in the LEAF or other Nissan models.

"Nissan LEAF owners are among our most enthusiastic customers, and we wanted to get them involved in a unique way as we celebrate LEAF's anniversary, so we asked followers on Facebook and Twitter which songs they would choose to honour the all-electric vehicle's five years on the road," said Andrew Speaker, director, Electric Vehicle Sales & Marketing, Nissan.

The first all-electric Nissan LEAF was delivered on December 11, 2010, to Olivier Chalouhi of San Francisco, and since then Nissan has sold nearly 200,000 units globally.

Nissan recently introduced the 2016 LEAF in the US, equipped with a new 30kWh battery that extends the miles per charge by more than 20 percent. The new model will be launched in Japan this month and in Europe in the new year.

As the level of electric vehicle technology continues to increase, Nissan believes that this shift towards cleaner, more efficient zero emission vehicles will contribute greatly in improving air quality and lowering noise levels.

"EV technology will continue to be at the heart of Nissan's product development efforts. By combining our pioneering EV technologies and other intelligence and innovations, Nissan is moving closer to a zero-emission future for car transportation. With the technologies we are creating, mobility is becoming safer, cleaner, more connected and more exciting. That's the power of innovation.  And that's what you can expect from Nissan," said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn.
