Young Driver – the biggest under 17 driving school in the UK – asked motoring journalist, Quentin Willson for his top driving tips to pass on to young drivers (and older ones).
Quentin Willson fronted Top Gear for a decade and writes for numerous national publications, while also campaigning tirelessly on behalf of Britain's motorists. Here are his pearls of wisdom:
Learn Far Ahead. Focussing a long way down the road will help you identify far-away problems before they get too close.
Adjust Your Distance. Always maintain a protective space between you and the vehicle in front. The more time and space you have to react to a sudden emergency, the safer you’ll be.
Be Smooth. Don’t stab at the controls. Do everything gently and don’t rush things. Smooth progress is safe progress.
Eyes Everywhere. Never stop looking around you, ahead, in the mirrors or to the side. Make your field of vision as wide as possible.
Expect the Worst. Treat every other driver as though they haven’t seen you and drive defensively. That way you’ll be ready for anything.
With over 70 venues, Young Driver’s instructors have helped more than 750,000 young people enjoy the buzz of driving.
